Darjeeling academician John West passes away

greatest teachers and academicians. 80-year-old John West
Darjeeling: Darjeeling on Thursday bid a tearful farewell to one its greatest teachers and academicians. 80-year-old John West was among the last of the educationists who had left their countries and stayed back, contributing towards Darjeeling's global image as a seat of education, especially in the yesteryears. He was also a pioneer of computer education in the Hills. Born on July 9, 1939, in England, West after becoming a Chartered Chemist arrived in Darjeeling in 1968 and immediately struck a bond with the place, going on to make Darjeeling his home.

In Darjeeling, he joined Mount Hermon School to teach Chemistry and Physics. In 1982, he joined St. Joseph's School. Here he co-authored books with Maurice Banerjei which became regulation textbooks in the ICSE schools all over the country. He also underwent training at the BE College, Shibpur when ICSE introduced computers as a subject. He also held the post of Chief Examiner of Chemistry for the ICSE Board for many years. Darjeeling remembers John West as a passionate footballer too. John West is survived by wife Neena. West suffered a massive cardiac arrest and passed away in his residence in Darjeeling on Wednesday morning.
