Kolkata: The Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency in the state of West Bengal went to polls on April 18 in the second  phase of the 2019 general elections. Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Saman Pathak from the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) contested against MLA Amar Singh Rai of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Raju Singh Bisht. The Congress candidate was MLA Sankar Malakar.
The Darjeeling constituency is one of the 42 seats from the state of West Bengal in the lower house of Parliament. It is divided into seven State Legislative Assembly segments.
In the 2014 general elections, BJP stalwart and national vice-president SS Ahluwalia defeated Indian football legend Bhaichung Bhutia who stood on a TMC ticket with a vote margin of 17.27 per cent or 1,97,239 votes.

SS Ahluwalia has been a four-time MP from Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand. He joined the Lok Sabha after his victory in the 2014 general election. However, Ahluwalia contested from the Burdwan-Durgapur Lok Sabha constituency in the 2019 general election.
Jaswant Singh, one of the founding members of the BJP has also held the Darjeeling seat from 2009 to 2014.
The TMC has never won a Lok Sabha seat from Darjeeling and is looking to break that barrier with help of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.
The Darjeeling constituency went to poll in the second phase of the general election along with Jalpaiguri and Raiganj Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal on April 18. The results will be declared on May 23.
