Darjeeling: With the tourist season fast approaching the Darjeeling Police is all set to welcome the tourists with a bouquet of services. "We have come up with a dedicated tourist helpline. Tourists can contact us 24X7 on this number. The number —0354- 2256356— will be displayed at all prominent places," said Amarnath K, superintendent of police, Darjeeling. A tourist welcome centre will come up at Simulabri in the foothills from where the climb to Darjeeling starts. "We will provide free water to the tourists along with pamphlets having important information on government approved fares, distances between important destinations, tourist map. Feedback forms will also be provided," the superintendent of police said.

A tourist help centre is operational adjacent to the Town DSP office in the Main Marker Square. "The emergency number 100 dial is being revamped so that response time within the town limit is reduced to 10 to 15 minutes," the SP said. A police van and two motorcycles will be pressed into service to redress any complaints by tourists.

"Two areas where the tourists face problems are hotels and taxis. During tourist season there are numerous complaints of taxis overcharging. On the other hand tourists complain of problems mainly with online hotels booking. We have had meetings with both Hotel Owners' Association and Taxi syndicates. Stringent action will be taken in case we receive any such complaints," the SP said further. Usually during tourist season taxi fares shoot up. The SP stated the government approved fare charts have to be displayed prominently and overcharging will not be allowed. "We are planning to organise various contests like photography contests for the tourists. These competitions will be mainly online through the Darjeeling Police website. We will initiate this from the third week of March. We have a dedicated public relations team for this," the SP said. The van along with the two motorcycles to be used for tourist assistance were flagged-off on Wednesday. The Darjeeling Police have also started a unique pink patrol. "This was launched on International Women's Day. A dedicated all women police patrol led by the officer in charge of the women's police station is known as the pink patrol. It is getting an immense response. They mainly look into women related cases including domestic violence, POCSO," Amarnath said. Similar patrols would be launched in Kurseong and Mirik in future.
