GJM central committee member arrested from Charmuchi
Relations between the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and the ruling Trinamool Congress are on the brink of collapsing once again following the arrest of Sandip Chettri, a central committee member of the GJM of Chamurchi in the Dooars.
The arrest given Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to Kalimpong to participate in a bipartite meeting with the GTA has made the situation more volatile and any favourable outcome looks bleak, at least for the moment, say political analysts.
The Banarhat police apprehended Chhetri this morning from Charmuchi. GJM leader Sushil Pradhan alleged the police acted in a very aggressive manner when they came to detain Chhetri and even fired a blank shot. He feared the police may torture Chhetri both mentally and physically and he demanded the arrested leader be produced before court right away.
DSP (Crime) Aniruddha Thakur claimed the police neither fired any shot nor apply any force. Jalpaiguri district police superintendent Kunal Agarwal said the court ordered Chhetri’s immediate arrest as he his suspected of involvement in a murder committed during a series of strikes called by the GJM in the Dooars back in 2009.
GJM leader Shraban Biswakarma condemned Chhetri’s arrest as purely politically motivated. The arrest is being seen by political pundits as a war of nerves. They said the upcoming meeting in Kalimpong will be more significant as one can observe how the GJM reacts to the arrest including the reaction of the chief minister. (EOIC)
