Gorkhaland Effect: Greater Cooch Behar demand

 Greater Cooch Behar demand
After the decision on a Telangana state, not only has the Gorkhaland statehood issue resurged, but also that for a Greater Cooch Behar state to give the state government a big headache.

Cooch Behar leaders today held a press conference in Siliguri demanding a separate state of their own.

Greater Cooch Behar People’s Association president Shivaji Sarkar said, “We demand a state should be made keeping the culture and the people of the area in mind. Our culture and traditions are the same as those of Jharkhand. This is a common agenda and we have been called by the union home ministry on September 3 when an eight-member team will meet with home minister Sushil Kumar Sindhe and discuss our demand.”

He also said a letter from the home ministry has been received and accordingly, his party is preparing to head to Delhi. The Assam-based students’ wing of the organisation will head the meeting in Delhi and its top leaders will be present.

The demand for Greater Cooch Behar will surely give more headaches to the Mamata Banerjee-led government that already has its hands full containing the GJM-led demand for a separate state.

Besides, a movement demanding a Kamtapur state is also simmering in North Bengal. If the demand for a Greater Cooch Behar were to gather steam, it would mean the opening up of a new challenge for the already embattled state government to deal with.

The chief minister has reiterated time and again she will not allow the Darjeeling hills to separate from Bengal at any cost and it can be safely stated that she will adopt a similar “rough and tough” stance towards the Greater Cooch Behar activists as well.(EOI)
