Darjeeling Roy Villa handed over to Ramakrishna Mission
DARJEELING, 16 MAY: ‘Roy Villa,’ located on the outskirt of Darjeeling town at Lebong Cart Road where Sister Nivedita breathed her last on 13 October in 1911 was handed over to the Ramakrishna Mission today in the presence of the Chief Minister, Miss Mamata Banerjee.
The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration Chief Executive, Mr Bimal Gurung formally handed the heritage building to the care of the Ramakrishna Mission.
This followed a meeting among the state government, GTA and the Mission. However, it is decided that the information and cultural department of the state government would look after the maintenance of the heritage building. Formerly occupied by the Darjeeling Gorkha Hills Council (DGHC), the villa was later transferred to the games and sports department under the GTA.
It is learnt that the Mission would open a language school, a free coaching centre for those aspiring to appear in the IAS and IPS examinations and a girls’ campus. The information and cultural department of the state government has sanctioned Rs 1 crore for its renovation.
“A mutual agreement was reached today to renovate Roy Villa. It would be a tribute to the memory of Sister Nivedita,” said the Chief Minister
The state government has transferred Tenzing Norgay Youth Hostel located at Dr Zakhir Hussain Road to the GTA in return of the Villa.
The North Bengal Development Affairs Minister, Mr Gautam Deb has been asked to sanction Rs 1 crore for its renovation, added the Chief Minister.
