People in large numbers paid homage to Amod Gurung, the assistant sub-inspector of Mirik police who died at a Siliguri based nursing home on 24 October after being beaten by a group of youths while on duty in Mirik on 21 October.

Late Amod Gurung's last rites were concluded with Buddhist rituals on Monday at a burning ghat near his ancestral house in Simana Bajar near Pashupati-Mirik in Darjeeling.

Siliguri mayor Ashok Bhattacharya also visited the residence of Late Amod Gurung and offered his prayers and 'khadas' to the police officer, while expressing his condolences to the deceased's family members. Amod Gurung is survived by his wife and two sons.

While talking to the mayor, his wife and sister requested Bhattacharya to take an initiative to ensure stern action against the murderers. They also requested him to make sure that the culprits never get bail, and asked him to provide government jobs for the deceased officer's children.

Bhattacharya said he is just a mayor but still do whatever is possible. He assured them that they will definitely take stern measures and with the help of the leader of opposition in the state assembly, Surya Kant Mishra, he will try to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.

Talking to reporters, Bhattacharya said that it was a heinous crime and also a matter of concern as a man (police) who was on duty to provide and ensure security to the public was killed. He added that the family members of the slain police officer have been demanding stern action and that the culprits be hanged to death, and he wants the same.

Police officials from different places in the Hills participated in the funeral procession. A police band from Daali, Darjeeling performed during the funeral to honour the Late Amod Gurung.

Apart from them, Hill TMC leaders, Rajen Mukhia, NB Khawas and TMC councillor and the leader of opposition at the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, Nantu Pal were also present at the burning ghat to pay homage to Late Gurung.

Talking to the reporters, Khawas said that the incident was really an unfortunate one, and they strongly condemn it. He added that the north Bengal development minister, Gautam Deb is presently out of station, but as soon as he returns, proper measures will be taken on the matter.(sns)
