Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) President Bimal Gurung
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) President Bimal Gurung on Saturday said he and several others named in the CBI charge sheet in connection with the murder of All India Gorkha League leader Madan Tamang were innocent.

"Me, wife Asha, party MLA Harkabahadur Chettri and all others in the Morcha are innocent and we are victims of a conspiracy," Gurung told a hastily-called press conference here.

The GJM leader, who however refrained from elaborating on the conspiracy, said, "We have faith in the judicial system and let the truth come out about the murder."

The press meet was also attended by other Morcha leaders.

Gurung's comments come after CBI on Friday filed the final supplementary charge sheet in the District and Session Court Kolkata against him levelling charges of murder and criminal conspiracy for the killing of Madan Tamang.

The charge sheet also named Asha, GJM MLA from Kalimpong, Harkabahadur Chettri, Assistant General Secretary of GJM, Binoy Tamang, GTA Chairman Pradeep Pradhan, deputy chief executive of GTA Col Ramesh Allay and 16 others for criminal conspiracy, murder and other charges.

Prime accused in the case, Nickol Tamang had, however, disappeared mysteriously from Pintail village near Siliguri, where he was being held by state CID, on August 21, 2010 for interrogation following his arrest.

Pema Tamang, wife of Nickol Tamang, had moved a habeas corpus before the Calcutta High Court saying that her husband be traced.

The High Court had then directed the CBI to take up the Madan Tamang murder case and the Nickol Tamang disappearance case.

Madan Tamang had been hacked to death at Upper Clubside in the heart of Darjeeling town on May 21, 2010 when he was overseeing preparations for a public meeting.

Gorkha Rifles jawans injured in truck blast Dehradun
Four Gorkha Rifles jawans were injured on Saturday when a metallic object in their truck went off in the high security Garhi Cantonment area here in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand, Dehradun. The explosion took place when one of the jawans touched a metallic object kept at the back of the truck and it went off, Cantonment Police station SHO Kamlesh Namburi said.

The jawan mistook the object about one-and-a-half inch long for a spare part of the vehicle and tried to lift it when it exploded in his hand injuring him and three of his colleagues, the SHO said.

While the wrist of the jawan in whose hand it exploded had to be amputated, the rest of them were discharged after first aid by the military hospital, he said. The jawan who had to undergo the surgery is still at the hospital.

The truck had just left for from the 68 Gorkha Rifles Unit here to bring rations and had gone hardly about 50 to 100 yards within its campus when the explosion took place, the SHO said. Investigations are on to find out as to how the object which could also be a used or dated ordnance product found its way into the truck, he said.

Sources at the SSP office earlier had said citing preliminary reports that it was a grenade explosion. Garhi Cantonment where the explosion took place is a high security area with the official residence of the Chief Minister and Raj Bhawan located there.

Governor Kesharinath Tripathi and gta chief bimal gurung roshan giri in Darjeeling
A Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) delegation led by party president Bimal Gurung called on West Bengal Governor Kesarinath Tripathi in Darjeeling on Friday and submitted a memorandum with the demand (Gorkhaland ) seeking his intervention for the creation of a separate state in the hills.

The Bengal Governor arrived in Darjeeling on May 27 and would return to Kolkata on June 5.

The GJM chief accompanied by five senior leaders reached the Raj Bhawan in the morning and apprised the Governor of their demand. “We welcomed the Bengal Governor to the Hills and also submitted a memorandum with our demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland,” said Gurung after the meeting that lasted 20 minutes. “We have maintained peace in the Hills and now we want to progress. This can only be achieved by a separate state,” he said.

GJM general secretary Roshan Giri who was also present pointed out that the BJP has supported the statehood demand. “In its election manifesto the BJP has said it would sympathetically examine our demand. We want a committee to be formed soon to start the process of examining our justified demand,” he said.

Apart from the statehood demand the GJM delegation also placed a complaint before the Governor of state government interfering in the functioning of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). “The GTA is reaching its third year but we have not been able to work properly due to unnecessary interference by the state government. We want to do many developmental works in the Hills but cannot. How can we run the council this way,” Giri said.

The GJM general secretary said several subjects were yet to be fully transferred to the council. Issues such as establishing a School Service Commission, a College Service Commission and a sub-ordinate staff selection board by the council in the Hills as per the 2011 GTA agreement had also not been implemented. “We have more than 500 vacancies in high school and higher secondary schools. Besides, there are nine colleges under the GTA. But we have not been able to make the selection due to the interference of the state government,” Giri said. According to him, under such circumstances the ultimate solution to the problem of the hills was separation from Bengal.

Terming the day’s meeting as positive; Giri said that the Governor had invited a GJM delegation to Kolkata on June 15 to discuss in details the problems plaguing the hills. “The Governor has asked us to come to Kolkata and discuss our problems. The state chief secretary and home secretary will also attend the meeting to arrive at a solution,” he said. (EOIC)

Dead body Madan Tamang AIGL president
The CBI in its final chargesheet in the Madan Tamang murder case has named Gorkha Janmukti Morcha chief Bimal Gurung and almost the entire top rung of the hill party, charging the leaders with murder, criminal conspiracy and rioting.

Madan Tamang, the chief of the Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League leader, was hacked to death in the heart of Darjeeling town on May 21, 2010, while overseeing preparations for a political meeting. At the time he was assassinated, his party ABGL was the most vocal critic of the Morcha.

The hacking was the most high-profile political murder in the Darjeeling hills in recent years.

The FIR in the murder case had named 15 people, among them Gurung, his wife Asha who is the Nari Morcha chief, and several senior leaders.

The central agency's chargesheet submitted to a CBI court in Calcutta today also named Gurung's wife Asha, who is the Nari Morcha chief, party assistant secretary Binay Tamang, MLA Harka Bahadur Chhetri, party general secretary Roshan Giri, GTA chairman Pradeep Pradhan, party vice-president Ramesh Allay and senior leader Devendra Sharma, among others.

Besides murder, criminal conspiracy and rioting, they have been charged with rioting with deadly weapons, mischief causing damage and criminal intimidation.

The final chargesheet comes four years after the central investigating agency took over the probe at the direction of Calcutta High Court.

The CID had first taken up the case and submitted a chargesheet, naming 30 people and 61 witnesses. None of the top-rung Morcha leaders figured among the accused.

After the CBI took over the case in 2011, it had named Dipen Mallay, an elected GTA Sabha member, in a supplementary chargesheet, taking the total number of accused to 31.

"The accused named in the final chargesheet today have been charged with murder and criminal conspiracy," said a CBI officer. "There is specific evidence against each of those named and we will furnish them during trial," the officer added.

After the case was give to the CID, one of the key accused, Nickol Tamang, escaped after being arrested by the state agency on August 16, 2010. He remains untraceable.

On January 20, 2011, Calcutta High Court told the CBI to take over the murder case and the one regarding Nickol's disappearance.

The late ABGL chief's widow, Bharati Tamang, who leads the party now, had also pleaded before the high court that the case be shifted out of Darjeeling, saying a fair trial was not possible there.

Morcha general secretary Giri, when asked about today's chargesheet, said: "We will first consult our lawyers before making any statement."

The ABGL leadership demanded the immediate arrest of the Morcha leaders.

"The chargesheet has shown that none is above the law and it shows that the Morcha leadership is involved. We are told that these leaders have been shown as absconders in the chargesheet. We demand their immediate arrest," said Pratap Khati, the general secretary of the ABGL.

He added: "Since these leaders are influential, we demand that trial should be held in custody."

Of the 31 named in the chargesheets of the CBI and the CID, Dinesh Subba is untraceable. Another accused, Dil Kumar Rai, was found murdered near Darjeeling on December 28, 2011.

Sangay Yolmo, another accused, is bed-ridden. Yolmo was hit by a bullet during a clash on the day Madan Tamang was assassinated. The bullet pierced his spine, making him paralytic.

The rest are out on bail.

Mary’s Grotto at St Mary’s hill Kurseong vandalised
The Mary’s Grotto at St Mary’s hill in Kurseong was allegedly vandalised by criminals early on Friday, triggering outrage among the members of the local Christian community.

According to police, alleged miscreants smashed the glass which covered the grotto and dislodged the statue of Mary in what could be assumed was a part of attacks on such institutions across the country.

An FIR has been registered at Kurseong police station against unknown persons, they said. According to residents of the area, the criminals had wanted to hurt the religious sentiments of people in the town.

The Christian community leaders have demanded firm action against the culprits immediately, said a police spokesperson. The Mary’s Grotto is a sacred place for the Christians in Kurseong, the Roman Catholic group in particular, and hundreds of school students light candles and offer prayers while heading towards their respective schools. The Grotto is carved out of rock similar to that of ‘Lourdes Grotto’ in France. (HS)

Chitra Bhanu in kalimpong damaged by earthquake
The cottage somehow sustained the last tremors that shook Nepal but the ignored chalet is fragile which can wreck anytime, said the source. It was known that Chitrabhanu in Kalimpong used to edify people in cutting and tailoring, bag making, home crafts, etc, before but now with the changing scenario people seek to learn food processing and beautifying.

Now the organization runs under the direction of Kurseong polytechnic where the vocational training ends once in every three months. Apparently the session is yet to start and 20-30 local learners assemble in every batch, ‘at present we are giving importance to prepare a beautician as per their requisite’ said Subhadra Giri, the in-charge of Chitrabhanu.

The connection with Rabindranath Tagore makes Chitrabhanu flood with Bengali tourist; the ones who visit Pine View nursery never fail to sneak a peek to the cottage, speaking to the journalist one R.C Naiyar from Faraka said that Tagore’s things have been beautifully preserved in the museum, ‘this place is of a greater significance, it would be better if the government worked to get things repaired’ added Naiyar.

The in-charge later informed that they have been writing to the concerned authorities regarding the maintenance of the infrastructure where they have been assured each time but the work is yet to get started.

The building has developed major cracks at the back portion and has restrained the entrance of the tourists there; the stair leading to the first floor is also closed because of the same reason. However, the concerned department was not available to clarify the matter, where in the other hand the expectation of the people related to Chitrabhanu to get the building maintained is high.
he maintenance of Chitrabhanu built in 1965 by Tagore’s son and daughter-in-law in Atisha road to train women in arts and crafts is still ignored, despite the eye-catching damage of 2011 earthquake that rocked certain parts of North-East India.

Janmukti Asthai Karmachari Sangathan
The Janmukti Asthai Karmachari Sangathan today admitted that the organisation would be collecting financial contributions from its 5,800-odd members to cover legal expenses incurred for fighting a successful legal case in the Calcutta High Court recently but denied that it was demanding Rs 25,000 from each person.
The Calcutta High Court had on May 14 directed the state government to convene a meeting with representatives of the GTA in four months to decide how it would set in motion the process of absorbing over 5,800 casual employees into the hill body in permanent posts.
A number of contractual workers had told The Telegraph that word was being spread by Sangathan members that they should keep Rs 25,000 ready.
"I was told to make arrangement for Rs 25,000 to ensure that my job is regularised following the recent high court order. However, none of us have paid. We had also not received anything in writing from the organisation," a worried casual employee had complained.
Asked about the allegation, Machendra Subba, the president of the Sangathan, said: "I, too, have been hearing about it but we would like to clarify that the Sangathan has not fixed any amount. Some expenses have been incurred in fighting the case and we have told our members that they will have to contribute some amount. We have, however, not worked out total expenses that have been incurred or how much a member will have to pay. The figure of Rs 25,000 per member is not true."
Subba said the organisation would work out the amount per member within the "next few days".
The Sangathan is an affiliate of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.
Justice Sanjib Banerjee had issued the directive on a petition filed by the Sangathan. Since 2007, when the Morcha was formed, the Sangathan had been demanding regularisation of jobs.
Soon after The Telegraph had sought a clarification from Subba today, the Sangathan called a press conference in Darjeeling to reiterate its stand.
The press conference at the Darjeeling Press Guild Office was addressed by Deepak Sharma, the spokesman for the Sangathan, and secretary Kishan Gurung.
Most of the 5,800-plus casual employees who are currently working with the GTA were recruited by the now defunct Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council on a six-month contract.

No one can bring Gorkhaland alone, GJM indulging in drama accuses CPRM to hold rally on 31 May
Blaming the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha of indulging in mere drama, and not being serious towards the Gorkhaland issue, the Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxist have decided to hold a rally in Darjeeling.

The rally is slated for May 31st, 2015 at 11:30 A.M and will be held at Chowk Bazar, Darjeeling.

Speaking to the press, CPRM Spokesperson Govind Chettri said, "we have repeatedly said that Gorkhaland is not possible for a single entity... all of us need to work together to achieve it... GJM is only indulging in a drama and misleading the public."

He accused that the "GTA has become a roadblock for Gorkhaland statehood.... as most leaders in Delhi think that the issue has been solved with the formation of GTA.... only if they dissolve GTA... will the government take the Gorkhaland statehood demand seriously."

He stated that GJM is scared that someone else will snatch the Gorkhaland issue, and said, "the GJM will do well to resign from GTA instead of organizing mela and deceiving people by feeding them masu-bhat."

Highlighting the fact that nothing has been done towards the Gorkhaland issue, Mr. Chettri said, "They said Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh promised to form a committee to study the Gorkhaland demand... what happened to that? They said a Fact Verification Committee will be formed to determine the inclusion of Mauzas from Dooars... what happened to that? Why are they not speaking on the issue? Why are they not questioning the Home Minister? All they are doing is drama and keeping their position safe."

He requested people to join the rally on the 31st of May, where more such issues and the failure of GJM and GTA will be highlighted.

Bimal Gurung
The GTA today set up a committee to monitor the activities of fund-mobilising companies and said the autonomous body should be notified if any such firms planned to operate in the Darjeeling hills.
Even though the GTA does not have powers to ban any companies which have requisite permission from regulatory bodies like Sebi, sources said Bimal Gurung was planning to use municipalities to keep track of deposit collection companies in the future.
All four municipalities in the hills are administered by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.
"Every business has to obtain a trade licence from municipalities and its needs to be renewed every year. Gurung wants to ensure that the activities of the fund collection companies are also monitored by the municipalities as most of their offices are invariably set up in urban areas. If there are complaints, the licences can be cancelled ," said a source.
Senior state government officials at Nabanna said fund mobilising companies were usually registered with Sebi and Registrar of Companies.
The state government has framed an Act - The West Bengal Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Establishments Bill, 2013 - soon after the collapse of Saradha where district magistrates are given authority to act against sham companies if complaints are lodged, said officials.
"The Act is yet to secure presidential assent. Once the Act gets the Presidential nod, district magistrates would have some authority but a body like the GTA apparently does not have any authority to control such companies," said a senior government official.
Gurung announced the committee after fund mobilising companies' agents and depositors met his at his Patlabas office in Darjeeling today.
The committee is headed by Binay Tamang, elected GTA Sabha member and also the assistant secretary of the Morcha. Other members include GTA elected members, Samuel Gurung, Mahendra Pradhan and Arun Ghisingh, chairman of Kurseong municipality Samar Deep Blone, GTA media executive Vikram Rai, Darjeeling municipality pleader Regan Lama and law officer, GTA, Bedan Gurung.
Gurung said in a press release that the Gorkha Janmukti Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of the party, would also "assist" in the monitoring of the fund companies. #The statement also said the "agents and depositors of various companies today requested Bimal Gurung to help them recover their deposits". "Gurung has assured all help that is possible from the GTA," said the release.
"Gurung has said the issue should not be made political... From now onwards the GTA will strictly monitor the activities of fund mobilising companies and will not allow illegal companies to function and for these purposes, a committee was formed today," the release states.
"In future, such companies must notify the GTA about its activities failing which the GTA will take legal recourse," the statement said.
A source, who was present at the meeting, said: " Gurung was told that various small companies, which are not known properly, also operate in the hills. Gurung wants the committee to find out if such companies are operating in the hills even now."
Anurag Srivastav, the district magistrate, Darjeeling, said: "I am not aware of the decision taken by the GTA. Technically, there are regulatory bodies like Sebi, RBI and therefore, I think they might not be able to prosecute anyone. Anybody can inform regulatory bodies if they find anything amiss."

Rabindra Bhavan at Mungpoo
North Bengal development minister Gautam Deb today said his department would spend Rs 1 crore on the restoration of Rabindra Bhavan at Mungpoo and improve the road communications to the hill hamlet where Rabindranath Tagore had gone four times between 1938 and 1940.
"We will immediately start the restoration of Rabindra Bhavan at Mungpoo. North Bengal development department will spend Rs 1 crore in this regard. Initially, it was decided that the funds would be spent jointly by my department and the state information and cultural affairs department," Deb told journalists here this afternoon.
Mungpoo is around 70km from Siliguri. Tagore had visited the bungalow four times between 1938 and 1940 because of his love for the place and a special bond with Maitreyi Devi, daughter of his friend. She was married to the then director of cinchona plantation, Manmohan Sen.
"It was during the celebrations of Tagore's birth anniversary this year that we came to know that there was no electricity at Rabindra Bhavan, as WBSEDCL has disconnected the power connection. We will restore the power and do repairs on a war footing in the next three months so that we can commemorate the bard's death anniversary at Mungpoo with grandeur this year," said the minister.
At Mungpoo, sources said, the north Bengal development department would host a cultural event where artistes from Siliguri and Dohar, a Bangla band, will perform during the bard's death anniversary.
"As per the instruction of the chief minister, Rs 4 crore has been sanctioned by the state to set up a research centre on Tagore at Mungpoo. Once we complete certain formalities involving the GTA, the work will start," said Deb.
The minister also said two new bus services would start operations to Mungpoo from Siliguri and Darjeeling from June. "We intend to develop Mungpoo as an ideal tourist destination. Bus services will be introduced from Siliguri and Darjeeling. Any visitor can take the bus, visit Mungpoo and return on the same day by the same bus," Deb said.
He also said Matir Sathi, a comprehensive textbook library, would be opened at Himanchal Bihar in Matigara, on the outskirts of Siliguri, soon.
"This is going to be the first referral text book library in north Bengal. The state library science department has developed this modern library at Himanchal Bihar. The chief minister has named it Matir Sathi. It is a four-storied building developed by the library science department at Rs 1.15 crore. My department will also spend another Rs 50 lakh. Initially, books in English, Bengali, Hindi and Nepali languages will be available there for the reference by students and researchers," Deb said.
"The library is almost complete. The chief minister will inaugurate it when she visits north Bengal the next time."
The minister also said the library science department had launched a separate project to restore the existing library building of Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, adjacent to Dinabandhu Mancha, in Siliguri. According to Deb, Rs 1.8 crore will be spent in this regard.
Deb said his department would start work for improved drainage system, boundary wall, parking area and beautification of the Siliguri district hospital.

Morcha president Bimal Gurung
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung today urged Muslims in the Dooars to join hands with the Gorkhas to redress common grievances.

Addressing a meeting attended by the members of the Dooars-headquartered Bharat Millat-e-Islamia Society at Bhanu Bhawan in Darjeeling, Gurung said both the communities had been at the receiving end of the state government's apathy, and it was imperative for them to join hands for a common cause.

"Let us both hold a big meeting in the Dooars and put out a show of strength. You bring about three lakh Muslims and we will bring equal number of Gorkhas and let us demonstrate our strength. Both the communities face a crisis of identity in our own country. We must work unitedly to address this," he said.

Imtiaz Khan, the secretary of the Islamia society, said the Muslim community was reaching out to Gurung to address their myriad problems of education, unemployment and development.

"The Morcha president has been very sympathetic to our problems, which primarily relate to education, unemployment, health and development. We are here at his invitation. We will reach out to the state government and the Centre to get our problems addressed. We have nothing to say on the Morcha demand for Gorkhaland," he said.

Asked if the Muslims wanted the Dooars to be included in the GTA, he replied in the negative.

Observers said the Morcha was trying to broad-base its appeal in the Dooars by wooing non-Gorkhas like the adivasis and the Muslims.

"Look, the Morcha has managed to woo a section of the adivasis by aligning with John Barla. It hopes to do the same by aligning with the Islamia society. The Muslims have a strong presence in the Dooars. However, we are not certain about the hold of the society in the Muslim community of the Dooars," said an observer.

mountain of muds behind kalimpong girls high school
While the authority of Girls High School (GHS) Kalimpong vconcentrates on its 125th bicentenary year, the vacant land located behind the school known as Mission Ground gets encroached and a mountain of muds are dumped. Students and teachers of the school assembled in the site this morning in a form of protest.

The land officially belongs to Girls High School and the authority seeks cooperation from the public and appeals everyone not to dump anything there. Around 20-30 teachers present there unanimously said that they have plans of projects in the land which they will proceed in the future.

In the other hand the frequent dumping of mud has increased the land level and drastically decreased the height of the wall which leads to back side of the girl’s hostel, the students however complain that they feel unsafe and insecure with trespassers invading the girl’s dorm.

Speaking to this correspondent one Prerna Niraula a boarding student said that a man of mid twenties entered their room few months ago, ‘We are girls and a random man intruding amidst the security at 3 am in our room will definitely cause anxiety’ said Niraula ordering that the ones who dumped the hilly mud in their site will have to level the land or remove it soon.

Meanwhile, one of the teachers standing in mission ground said, ‘a school is a social organization and not a public property, we protest this act because everyone has to respect the organization which is meant for the female’s education.’

The GHS family also said that they saw the dumped muds this morning and don’t know who unloaded it and when, factually because the plot of land lies opposite and many yards away from the main school building. The principal avoiding controversies and refusing to speak later said that this act of infringement is not the first time.

She further added that the excavated mud from any construction done in Kalimpong was deposited there, speaking about the past she said, ‘I was alone to fight for this land in the past but today I see the teachers and students standing here to protest without my direction which made me realize that this is now ‘our’ fight.’

The students of class 9-10 who were there said that the land solely belongs to them and appeals the civilian bodies to respect the property of the school.

5 members of Mahendra P Lama election trust quit DDUDF
All five trustees of the Darjeeling Dooars United Development Foundation (DDUDF), which was formed to push the candidature of Mahendra P. Lama in the Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency in the last general elections, have resigned from the board saying the entity has been dormant ever since its inception.

The five trustees of the foundation, B.K. Pradhan, Bharat Prakash Rai, Rev. C Baruah, Hem Baraily and Udhyan Rai, said in a signed statement: "It has been unanimously resolved that the following trustees of DDUDF have agreed to renounce from the trusteeship of DDUDF owing to the fact that the board of trustee has remained dormant and non functional since its inception."

The decision was taken by the board of trustees at a meeting held in Darjeeling on May 19 under the chairmanship of Pradhan.

Lama, the former vice-chancellor of the Sikkim University, had contested the last Lok Sabha election as an Independent and got 55,767 votes. On March 9 early this year, Lama had said he would form a political party soon as it was the "people's wish".

Pradhan today said: "The very fact that a meeting of the board of trustees hasn't been held even once since its inception propelled us to renounce the trusteeship."

Asked if Lama's decision to form the political party had forced the resignation, Pradhan said: "Well, I was the one who had asked Mahendra bhai to contest the (Lok Sabha) election... there is talk of a political party and we might unnecessarily get dragged into this without our involvement."

Told about the trustees' resignation, Lama, who was in Delhi today, said: "It is their voluntary decision and I have nothing much to say. We will soon constitute a new board."

Asked if his plan to float a political party would be affected, Lama said: "We will definitely float a party as it is the people's wish. We are still working on the date to float the party."

Siliguri women duped 2 lakhs by Facebook friend
A middle-aged woman of Siliguri was lured into parting with Rs 2 lakh by a Facebook friend who assured her a surprise gift, said  SMP police.
According to police, the victim, Reema Thakur, a resident of Subhas Pally, was first asked to clear a tax to receive the gift. Falling into the trap, she deposited Rs 2 lakh in various bank accounts only to realize soon that she had been duped.

She deposited the money in different banks after receiving calls from two persons who called themselves Chris Evans, and Larry Smith, asking her for more money. In total, she deposited Rs 2 lakh in 5 accounts.
A case under section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the IPC has been registered against Brooke, Evans, and Smith. All India Gorkha League (AIGL) chief Madan Tamang murdered body in darjeeling
The All India Gorkha League (AIGL) observed the fifth death anniversary of its slain leader Madan Tamang on Thursday in Darjeeling at the very spot where he was hacked to death in broad daylight on May 21, 2010.
Party leaders in their speeches rued the lack of apathy shown by the West Bengal government and the investigating agency in speeding the process to provide justice even after five years since the murder had taken place.
“We have failed to get justice even after five years. Is this how the law works in our country? If so than it is really sad,” said Laxman Pradhan, the AIGL vice president. The party adopted a resolution
to demand for judicial inquiry into their leader’s murder. “We will seek support of likeminded political parties of the hills first and then demand judicial inquiry into our leader’s murder,” he said.
Tamang, the AIGL president was hacked to death in the morning of May 21, 2010 at the Upper Clubside area of the town while overseeing preparation for a public meeting on that fateful day. The AIGL leader’s murder case was initially handled by the CID; however, it was taken over by the CBI but the investigation has failed to yield much result.
Bharati Tamang, the slain leader’s wife in 2012 had filed a petition in the Supreme Court questioning the slow investigation by the CBI and had demanded for a special investigation team into her husband’s murder. “Impartial investigation has not been done by the agencies presently handling the case. We want nothing but the truth to come to light and those involved brought to justice,” Pradhan said.
The CID had named 30 Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters and leaders in their charge-sheet. Prime accused Nicole Tamang, a GJM central committee leader, was arrested in August 2010 but mysteriously managed to abscond from Pintail Village, a government guest house near Siliguri, while being interrogated.
All others named in the charge sheet are presently out in bail apart from Nicole and Dinesh Subba who are absconding and a third person Sangey Yolmo who is in hospital. Dil Kumar Rai also named in the charge sheet was murdered at Goradura on the way to Singla tea estate, on December 28, 2011.
Representatives from the Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxisrt (CPRM), the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) and the Congress were also present, to pay their homage to the slain AIGL leader. (EOIC)

Ashok Bhattacharya - first north Bengal leader to CPM state secretariat
Newly elected mayor of Siliguri Ashok Bhattacharya was on Thursday inducted into the West Bengal state secretariat of CPM as a permanent invitee, the first party leader from north Bengal to find a place in the powerful body.

Officially, it was stated that Bhattacharya was nominated to the state secretariat as a “senior leader,” but party sources said that the move was really in recognition of the success of the party under his leadership in the Siliguri civic polls.

It was expected that Bhattacharya would be inducted into the state secretariat as a regular member, but the point was raised in the meeting that in his present occupation as the mayor
Siliguri, which requires full-time devotion, it would be difficult for Bhattacharya to attend meetings of the state secretariat every week in Kolkata. Bhattacharya is also the likely candidate of the party for the Siliguri seat in the coming assembly elections in 2016.

The victory of the Left Front in the civic polls in Siliguri is being viewed as an important success for the party during the rule of the Trinamool Congress. Besides being victory in the most important urban centre in the state after Kolkata, Siliguri is not a traditional stronghold of CPM. Though Bhattacharya has often won the Siliguri assembly seat, votes from some of the hill areas have played an important role in these.

Following the Siliguri Municipal Corporation poll results, now there is a buzz about an “Ashok Bhattacharya model” in CPM. According to party sources, Bhattacharya’s acceptability among different sections of the people in Siliguri, which has a cosmopolitan character, has played an important role in shaping the victory of the LF in the civic polls. He had reached out to people to take stock of their problems and woes, helping him to win support. (EOIC)

Organization for disabled louds against Kalimpong BDO
An organization for disabled went took the aerial route on Tuesday against Bimalindu Das, the Black Development Officer of Kalimpong Block I, criticizing him of not distributing the benefits allotted for disabled people in the block. The benefits are sponsored by the State and the Central governments.
The Parvatiya Apang Kalyan Sangathan (PAKS) plastered posters along Thana Dara here this morning accusing the BDO of his high- handedness. “If the BDO cannot distribute relief and rations meant for us, we will collect rations from ourselves and send it to the BDO,” read the frustrating poster. “The District Magistrate has already sent a letter to the BDO to immediately distribute the relief,” added the poster. Chotay Lal Prasad, the president of PAKS further alleged that the BDO has always underestimated the disabled in the block. “Does the BDO have the right to defraud with the rations and relief meant for disabled or is he underestimating us because we are disabled,” questioned Prasad.
“Das should answer this to us and the people of Kal-impong,” he added. The centre and the state has been providing the benefits to the handicaps since the last 10 years which ironically stopped after Das took over as BDO of Kalimpong block I.
“We will soon stage a dharna against Das infront of the office. If he cannot run the block in a systematic way he should leave the hills,” threatened Prasad.
The BDO told journalists that the District Magistrate has directed him to send the rations to locate the name of disable and distribute relief from concerned Gram Panchayats from where it would be distributed while the other benefits would be distributed from the Block office itself.
Prasad however said it was impossible for the disabled people to travel through the hilly terrain to collect the ration. “These disabled people have to come from all the way from Suruk-Samthar to collect benefits. How is it possible for them to come when they are disabled. Das expects these disabled people to come to collect 12 to 24 kg of ration and travel back home with loads,” said Prasad.

A case under milder sections 147, 148, 149, 323, 506, and 452 of IPC was registered on Monday evening at the DLF City phase 2 police station.

The four youth were “brutally assaulted” on Saturday at their rented accommodation by a group of men in Nathupur village near DLF Phase 3 in Gurgaon.

On Wednesday, the Gurgaon police invoked Section 307 against the accused after getting a medical report from AIIMS Trauma Centre where one of the victims has been admitted with multiple injuries.

“We have charged the culprits under Section 307 after getting the hospital’s report ,” said DCP east Deepak Saharan. He also assured the members of the Gorkha community who had gathered in large numbers at his office that police will take action.

Earlier, the members of the Gorkha community carried out a protest march from Sahara Mall to the office of DCP east near Galleria Market. The protesters carried placards protesting against police inaction, and shouted slogans against delay in filing of FIR against the accused.

THREE GORKHALIS FROM TEESTA VALLEY BRUTALLY BEATEN UP IN GURGAON BY LANDLORD'S AND FRIENDS, POLICE REFUSES TO FILE COMPLAINT

This is the picture of Abishek Rai... he and his two friends Sagar Rai and Dev Kumar Subba, were brutally beaten up by their landlord's son and his friends. According to sources, this incident happened near Sabji Mandi in Nathupur DLF Phase 3 Gurgaon, Haryana, last night around 11 PM.

According to a report in the Eastern Sky Media which covers news from all over NE, apparently there was some discussion amongst the three boys and the landlord's son over a noise complaint, which had been settled amicably. Dev Kumar Subba, one of the victims said that "later around 25 to 30 men carrying sticks barged into the rented flat and started beating the three mercilessly. Even though they tried to shield themselves, they were no match for the angry men."

The local police refused to file an FIR.

The news only came to light, when it was reported to Delhi Police for North East Folks. Once the report of the incident was shared with Jt. Commissioner Robin Hibu, who is in-charge of the Delhi Police for North East Folks. This is when we here at TheDC also came to know about the incident.

Once the matter was reported to Commissioner Robin Hibu, he immediately swung onto action. He called up his colleagues in Gurgaon and requested assistance and support to the boys.

Darjeeling MP S S Ahluwalia is currently in Darjeeling, but his PA is in the AIIMS trauma center with the victims, and providing assistance. The MP has said that he will reach Delhi in the morning, and will look into the case personally

The situation is so desperate that the boys can die, if proper care is not provided.

We request all the politicians and social groups to raise this issue with your MP, MLAs, Sabhasads, Bimal Gurung... so that they can all pressure Haryana Government which is run by BJP and is a GJM ko ally to bring to book the culprits, and to bear complete expenses of treatment for the three boys.

We also request our politicians to demand action against the police officers in Gurgaon who refused to file the FIR.

All Gorkhas youth must lobby and take up this seriousness with due seriousness.

PLEASE HELP THEM IF YOU ARE IN DELHI.... THEY ARE NOW ADMITTED TO AIIMS TRAUMA CENTER...

[These are all pics of Abhisekh Rai... the other two have been more severely beaten]

This is still a developing news story and an angle of racism and discrimination is also being looked at.

Gurgaon Case Update: Delhi Police, GJM, MP and BJP Swing Into Action
Thanks to social media and immediate relay of news from Delhi to here and back... we can now confirm that GJM, Darjeeling MP, and BJP have swung into action to provide assistance to the three victims of the brutal beating up case in Gurgaon.

As soon as the news was shared via TheDC, GJM Delhi unit chief Manoj Shankar headed off to AIIMS to take stock of the situation.

Darjeeling MP SS Ahluwalia and Ms. Linda Newmai of the BJP NE Cell got in touch with Gurgaon Police Comissioner Mr. S Navdeep Singh Virk and took update from him, and also wanted to know why FIR was not filed. The Gurgaon CP said that the police were reaching the hospital and that "the statement will be taken from the three victims, the accused will be duly arrested tonight once identified."

Since the MP is currently in Darjeeling, his Personal Assistant Mr. Shiv Kumar is currently in AIIMS and is monitoring the situation.

We thank all of the above concerned people for their prompt action, but most important of all, we want to thank Jt. Comissioner Robin Hibu Sir of the Delhi Police for North East Folks, who took personal initiative to contact Gurgaon Commissioner, Darjeeling MP, Sikkim MP and Haryana Government officials to help the three victims.

We are praying for the well being of the three victims, who are physically and mentally traumatized.

We also demand appropriate action against those police officers who refused to file complaint, even after seeing that the three boys from Darjeeling were on the verge of death.

Ashok Bhattacharya new mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation board
Belying any possibility of upsets, the Left Front on Monday duly formed the Siliguri Municipal Corporation  board, winning the election for the posts of mayor and chairman by a margin of 24 votes to 16. CPM veteran and former West Bengal minister for municipal affairs Ashok Bhattacharya was elected as mayor of Siliguri , while Dilip Singh was elected chairman of SMC.

For Trinamool Congress, the decision to contest in the mayoral election proved to be an embarrassment as the ruling party in the state not only failed to turn the tables on the LF but also could not keep its flock entirely together. For, though Trinamool has 17 elected councillors, party candidate for the post of mayor Nantu Pal secured only 16 votes. One vote in the Trinamool camp was cancelled for technical reasons, giving rise to the possibility of intra-party feud.

With 23 elected councillors in the 47-member SMC board and with the written support of the lone independent, the formation of the SMC board by the LF had never been in serious doubt. But, the last-minute decision of Trinamool to contest in the mayoral election had given rise to the apprehension of cross-voting. As it turned out, on the day of voting on Monday, Congress with four councillors and BJP with two councillors abstained from voting, reducing the majority mark to win the mayoral election effectively 21. Bhattacharya romped home comfortably with all the 24 listed votes.

“The efforts of Trinamool to engage in horse-trading have failed,” CPM Darjeeling district secretary Jibesh Sarkar told a television channel. “Had Trinamool tried to overturn the popular verdict in favour of the Left Front, people of Siliguri would have come out on the road.” He refused to comment, however, on how one vote in the Trinamool camp was disqualified, saying “it is an internal matter of that party.” Sarkar felt the Siliguri result would be a “milestone” in the road to revival of CPM in the state.

Pradesh Congress Committee leader Pradip Bhattacharya as well as BJP leader Shamik Bhattacharya had almost identical comments to make about the mayoral election in SMC. They abstained from voting as they wanted to maintain equidistance from CPM and Trinamool. But they were critical of the attempt by Trinamool to form the board even if the party was far short of majority. “It is not a healthy trend if the ruling party does not respect the popular verdict,” Bhattacharya said. In any case, it was a healthy trend if there was an effective opposition in state politics.

Bhattacharya started his political career as the member of CPM-supported student union SFI in the 70s and has been in the forefront of Siliguri politics ever since. His first big achievement in politics came when he was elected as the SMC chairman after winning the corporation election in 1987. Bhattacharya remained as the SMC chairman till 1991 and on the same year he ran as the CPM candidate for the West Bengal assembly seat from Siliguri Constituency.  He won his first assembly election and continued to remain the Siliguri MLA in 1996, 2001 and 2006. The CPM veteran however faced his toughest election battle in 2011, when the Trinamool candidate Rudranath Bhattacharya defeated him for the Siliguri assembly seat.(EOIC)
