GTA Met Minister Smriti Zubin Irani - Demands Central University in Darjeeling
A GTA delegation, led by GJM General Secretary Roshan Giri, Darjeeling MP S.S. Ahluwalia, Darjeeling MLA Trilok Dewan, GTA secretary Don Bosco Lepcha, and GTA executive director K.B. Yogi met union human resource development minister Smriti Irani in Delhi on Wednesday.

"We met Smriti Irani with a proposal to set up a Central University in the hills. She has asked her department to initiate a file on the matter. The GTA has also asked EDCIL India Limited, a government of India enterprise, to prepare a detailed project report by February end," Giri said over the phone.

Even though the GTA has been demanding the inclusion of a Central University for a while now, the Central government is yet to consider the demand seriously. The GJM is hoping for the inclusion of a Central University in the GTA region, which requires an Act of the Parliament to set up, to be placed in the upcoming budget or the monsoon session or the Parliament. However, experts who are aware of the due process are not so hopeful.

Corresponding with TheDC an education expert said, 'a Central University cannot be formed without the consent of the Parliament, so it takes considerable will on the part of the government, and pressure from the locals for any such institute to be constituted... and currently there is no such indication from the Government in Delhi.'

However, the GTA is moving in the right direction with initiative to prepare a detailed project report, which will help the government in Delhi to ascertain the feasibility of the University.

Another factor going in favour of the Central University in the GTA region is that, it is one of the items mentioned in the tripartite Memorandum of Understanding signed during the formation of GTA.

TheDC team is hopeful that with constant pressure on the government, we will be able to achieve our goal eventually.
