CM Mamata cancelled Sandakphu-Phalut trek
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who was scheduled to trek in Sandakphu in Darjeeling Hills ( CM Mamata to trek Sandakphu ) tentatively from the second week of October, may not visit the area following the Hudhud cyclone alert, official sources said today.
Though officials here said there is no official confirmation of the cancellation of the chief minister’s programme and the next date of her visit to the area. Notably, the Darjeeling district administration had started repairing roads to Sandakphu and even up to Falut for the chief minister’s plans.
Other departments, including the North Bengal Development Department, had also started preparations for the CM’s visit to Darjeeling from 13 October.
A team of security personnel for the chief minister had also visited various locations on the way to Sandakphu and its adjoining areas for accommodation for the CM and her team. Sources said Miss Banerjee’s plans have been cancelled due to the Hudhud cyclone alert. “The chief minister will not leave her headquarters following the alert that the cyclone is likely to hit coast by 12 October.  She will not be able to trek in Sandakphu amid the possibility of adverse climatic conditions following the cyclone’s effects,” sources said.
They also said that the plan’s postponement is due to the volatile situation in the state following the Khagragarh bomb blasts in Burdwan and the Oppositions’ campaigning against her government, demanding interference of the National Investigating Agency into the party’s alleged “links with terrorist groups” and the developments in the CBI probe into the Saradha scam. “Some key party leaders are allegedly under the scanner of the investigating agencies,” the sources said.
According to the sources, both the party leaders and top officials are waiting for the chief minister’s decision to break her prolonged silence and make her stand clear on the Burdwan blasts.
