SSB initiates Free Cleft Lip & Cleft Palate Operations
Shri Kuldiep Singh, IPS, Inspector General, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on 22 Sept’ 14 lit the lamp and formally inaugurated the programme of facilitating free Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate operations for the afflicted persons to bring smiles on to the faces of the Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate afflicted persons anywhere along the Indo Nepal and Indo Bhutan borders along the States of Bihar, Sikkim and West Bengal.

He announced that SSB had signed a MoU with Border Security Force, West Bengal Police, Kolkata Police, Rotary Club of Kolkata-Victoria under the initiative ‘Darpan’. He expressed dismay at the fact that the Cleft Lip and Palate inflicted persons had to lead a difficult life. He said that this infliction is caused due to lack of the deficiency of Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 and Calcium and malnutrition during pregnancy. He reassured the parents that there was no fears that these operations are risky as there are expert surgeons and state-of-the-art hospitals, who will handle the operations of their family members.

Shri Kuldiep Singh said that this humanitarian service is open not only to Indian citizens but, can be availed by citizens of Nepal and Bhutan on both sides of border. He said, efforts will also be made to extend the reach of the programme through the Armed Police Force of Nepal and the Royal Bhutan Police for the benefit of the people of Bhutan and Nepal. This would also help us do our bit to enrich the relations of India with both the countries. This subject will be taken up with the respective Forces during SSBs monthly and quarterly bilateral meeting with them in the coming months, he said.  

Through this scheme SSB will identify cleft lip and cleft palate inflicted persons, sensitize people in general about the cause of these afflictions and facilitate free operations, which otherwise for the border people is phenomenally costly. This endeavor will give the afflicted children or adults a new lease of life and prospects for a brighter future too.       

Dr. Neela Alen, Project Director, Smile Train Clinic at Anandloke Medical Centre made a presentation on Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate cases in West Bengal and the extensive work being done by Smile Train Clinic. She expressed delight that SSB had joined in this great humanitarian endeavor.

Shri S K Roy Managing Director, Anandaloke Medical Centre too appreciated the fact that SSB is well connected with the border people and that the endeavor of healing these people is bound to gain impetus in times to come.

Dr S Priyadarshi Commandant (Medical) and Nodal Officer for this endeavor welcomed the guests at the inaugural Ceremony at SSB Training Centre at Ranidanga today i.e., 22 Sept 2014 and informed the gathering that 72 persons  have been enlist with these afflictions from all along Indo Nepal and Bhutan borders. Out of them, 12 afflicted persons have been sent to Smile Train Clinic at Anandloke Medical Centre in Siliguri for preliminary investigations and to schedule dates for surgery. Henceforth, the combatized and civil Officers and personnel along with Para Medical Staff will reach the last man, woman or child in the village on Indo Nepal Border and Indo Bhutan Border to heal them of this blight.

Present on the occasion were, Shri A K Mallik, DIG, SHQ. Ranidanga and Shri K C Dobhal, DIG, Ftr, SSB, Siliguri frontier, senior officers of SSB, Dr A K Khandelwal, Director (Medical) AMC, Dr Kaushik Bhattacharya Consultant general Surgeon for Composite Hospital, BSF, Dr Basu Head of the Department Anesthesiology, Associate Professor  Dr Mandal, Dr Mukerjee of Mukerjee Dental Clinic and a host of other guests.
