Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) celebrates ‘Citizenship Day’

Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) celebrates ‘Citizenship Day’
Brushing aside the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s appeal against observing ‘Citizenship Day’, the Gorkha National Liberation Front today carried forward its programme across the Darjeeling hills.
In Kurseong, the GNLF organised a programme at Springside tea state to familiarise the people on the importance of the day. Kurseong GNLF convener Daya Dewan said observing Citizenship Day does not imply the Indian Gorkhas became the country’s citizens only after August 22, 1988 with the signing of the DGHC accord, but acknowledges the Gorkhas have been living in India since times immemorial.
“When we were branded as foreigners and bundled out from several regions of the North East in the 1980s, our party chief Subash Ghisingh decided to put an end to this problem and began pressurising the Centre to issue citizenship to all Gorkhas living in the country,” he said.
The DGHC accord clarifies that as from January 26, 1950, the day when the Constitution was formally adopted, all Gorkhas with Indian domicile have been formally accepted as citizens of the country, according to Dewan. (EOIC)
