22nd Nepali Language Recognition day celebrated in Mirik
The 22nd Nepali Bhasha Manyata Diwas (Nepali Language Recognition day)  with great enthusiasm at Mirik College auditorium by the Nepali Department. Since the establishment of the college in 2000, the students and faculty of the Nepali Department have been celebrating the day every year and this year too was no exception. As part of the programmes the Nepali language students collectively urged the college principle to start using Nepali as the official language of the institution.
The programme was presided over by principle BK Rai, while Mirik Sabhasad Arun Ghisingh was the chief guest for the function. Head of History department, Dr. Sujata Baraili, spread light on the history of the movement to constitutionally recognise Nepali language about 20 years ago. Professor Bikram Rai from Nepali Department said despite Nepali language getting accredited constitutionally during the 8th schedule of the constitution, there has not been much development of the language. He called on the hill administration to use Nepali as the official language. “If Nepali is used officially, its identity and importance will improve like other nationally recognised languages,” Prof. Rai claimed.
During the course of the programme, a debate competition among the Nepali language students was also staged. The topic for the debate was “Education should/should not be taught in mother language” and the students spoke in length on and against the motion. Other cultural programmes and a fashion show was also organised as part of the function today.(EOIC)
