North Bengal to experience scattered, sporadic rainfall due to E1 Nino effect
Siliguri, 17 June: There is some bad news for people of north Bengal, who are in extreme discomfort due to the prevailing heat wave. The region may experience scattered and sporadic rainfall during the monsoon because of an El Nino effect this year, according to weathermen.
The convener of the North Bengal University Weather Service Station, Subir Sarkar, said though monsoon arrived almost on time, the region did not experience heavy rains during the past fortnight due to the nature of the monsoon clouds over the region this year.
“Monsoon rains usually arrive around June 1 over India and it arrived on that date this year. It had been raining in north Bengal for a few days before June 1, but the parameters suggest that the monsoon arrived on that day. However, the region has been experiencing scattered rainfall because of a fractured monsoon owing to an El Nino effect this year,” he said. Mr Sarkar said that though sporadic rains were common during the first few weeks of the monsoon months, a fractured monsoon was an abnormal phenomenon and it appeared after a gap of several years in the region.
He predicted that the region might experience sporadic to heavy rains in the coming weeks.     SNS
