Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF)is all set to press its demands
Ending its political silence, the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), is all set to press for its demands and organize various programmes across Darjeeling Hills soon.
The party led by the former Darjeeling strongman, Subhas Ghisingh, is demanding restoration of the erstwhile Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) for a brief period until the Sixth
Schedule status for the Hills is achieved. Talking to reporters here today, GNLF Kurseong branch spokesperson, Daya Dewan, said members of the party’s branch here have been made aware of the party’s further political strategy that has been recently sorted out by the party’s central leadership.
According to him, the DGHC, a ‘constitutional body,’ had been set up on 22 August 1988 for Darjeeling Hills through a tripartite agreement and after approval from the central and the state governments.
He said his party demands scrapping of the present “unconstitutional Gorkhaland Territorial Administration,” and reinstatement of the DGHC.
Mr Dewan also said the party’s central leadership will also write to the central and state governments and also visit Delhi and Kolkata in the coming days.
“We have already prepared the pamphlets and posters for the same, which will be putting up at different places in the hills within this week,” he said.
According to him, the identity of the Gorkha community can be safeguarded only through the constitutional sixth schedule status for the Hills.(sns)
