Top leaders of the Gorkha Jana Mukti Morcha will meet the new Union Home Minister ~Mr Rajnath Singh and Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj this week to press for their demand of a separate state of Gorkhaland.
Sources in the GJMM said that they had discussed the issue of creation of a separate Gorkhaland with state BJP leadership, but there was no positive indication till now and as a result the GJMM leadership has decided to meet with the Union ministers.
A senior GJMM member said that they spoke with Mr S S Ahluwalia, the newly elected BJP MP. He has stressed on overall development of the residents of the hills, including Lepchas, Adivasis, apart from the Gorkhaland issue. As a result, there is a feeling that their demand for a separate state has been put on the back burner. This has prompted the GJMM leadership to meet with the top BJP leadership to press for their demand.
Mr Harkha Bahadur Chetri, spokesperson of the GJMM said Morcha members will meet with the top BJP leaders to take up the issue of creation of a separate statehood. He maintained that if Telangana can be made a separate state, why not Gorkahland.
According to him, the GJMM had supported BJP as the party had assured creation of a separate state and so they will go all out for fulfilling their dream.
Sources in the GJMM added that after coming from Delhi they will convene another meeting with the state BJP leadership and will discuss about the future course of action. Mr SS Ahulwalia is expected to be present at that meeting.
An analysis of the Lok Sabha results of BJP found that that the party was ahead in 21 assembly segments in the state, including Bhowanipore, and Jorasanko in North Kolkata.(SNS)
